The Boiton Herald, which appears to be mildly Republican in politics, sug gests Gov Cleveland as a Democratic Presidential nominee. The Boston IXsl summarizes the del egates elect to the Democratic Conven tion thus: ForTilden. 102; Butler. 29; Carlisle. 20; Uandall , CO. and Flower. 10. The Brooklyn Bridge was one year old on Saturday. During tho year over six millious of people crossed it on foot, and tho total receipts were $301, 770. Freddie Gebbard's horse Leo beat the record Saturday by jumping the top rail a . six lect six incnes. t reddie is a pretty high stepper himself, and ought t" be able to sec the same good points in a horse. It is said that when Mr. Blaine was aikd recently who would be the nominees at Chicago he replied thai he wa4 confident tho ticket would be Tilden and Carlisle. This was interest ing guessing, though not in the line the questioner intended. The strangest of recent marriage bells is Constance Bell, of Boykin, South Carolina, a handsome twelves yearold girl, who has married Dr. Jasper Benson, a widower of eighty. and, strangest of all, with the full as sent of her parents. Births are thus advertised in Ger many: "e most numoiy announce the birth of a hsrdy boy." "We hum bly announce the birth of s line and lively girl. Something has to be put in to reconcile the neighbors, and ''humbly' is as good as anything. Here is just what John 11. Lynch, oj Mississippi, the colord temporary Chairman of the Republican Conven tion at Chicago, said on taking bis scat in reference to the Presidential possibili ties : I am satisfied in my own mind that when we co before the people of this country our action will bo ratified, be cause the great heart of the American people will never consent to have a political party gain tho ascendancy in this government whose chief reliance is on a fraudulent ballot and on violence at tho polls. (Applause.) I am satis fied that tho people of this country are too loyal over to allow a man to be inaugurated President whose title to the position is brought forth in fraud. Lynch forgets that a stupendous monument of a Presidential fraud, a man inaugurated as President by fraud, i still alive to hear those words. His name is Rutherford B. Hayes. But the fraud will never be repeated. Tilden will be. nominated; Tilden - will be elected, and Tilden will take his seat. If Lynch really means to make a threat and to say that if a Democratic president should be elected ho will not be allowed to be inaugurated he is talk ing liko a fool. Ho should remember that his own name is a very significant one. Mr. Carl F. Kspcnschade, Mifllin town. The only case set for hearing to-day was that of Alex Oldham vs. First National Bank and E. E. Burruss, which, on account of the sickness of Mr. Burruss. which prevented him from bein in attendance, was contin ued for the term. The Court then ad journed until 10 o'clock to-morrow morning. We invite the attention of eur citizens to the fact that first quality shirts are being made to order at one dollar at the Wilmington Shirt Factory. tf. The work upon the Bare is progress ing as rapidly as could be expected. The boiler has been raised, besides con siderable property in the shape of fur niture, bedding, mattresses, &c, have been recovered. It has rained hard all day at Chicago. A platform bai been adopted, the most important feature is a plank calling lor such revision of the tariff as will protect American interests and labor. Pending a call of the States the convention ad journed until 7 o'clock to-night. ' A Day's Pleasure. There was a goodly crowd on the Ptissport this morning who took the opportunity of an excursion to Smith ville and the Forts under the auspices of the Second Baptist church of this city. It was a beautiful morning for a ride upon tho river, and we hope that the excursionists will have an enjoyable day.1 Slight Fire. An alarm was sounded a little before noon to-day, indicating that there was a fire in the Fifth Fire District. A frame building on the corner of Queen and Surry streets, occupied by four colored families, the same building which caught fire on Tuesday, caught fire on tho roof, whih caused the alarm. The engines responded promptly, but the flames were extinguished before they arrived, and, consequently, their ser. vices were not needed. The damage was slight. Personal. Mr. R. W. Chadwick is very low and he is now unable to recognize many of his friends and acquaintances. Capt. Swift Galloway, Solicitor of this Judicial District, arrived in the city last night and registered at tbe Parcel House. Dr. E. Porter, of Rocky Point, was in tho city to-day, and told us that times are very dull in his localiU. Same hero. Mr. A. A. Hartsfield, who has been critically sick for several weeks, has so far recovered as to be able to be out. He rode down to his store yesterday. Rev. Colin Shaw and wife, of Black River Chapel, Bladen county, who have been in Florida for several months arrived in the city yesterday on their return home They are the guests, while in tho city, of Mr. J. W. Monroe, on Second street, between Mulberry and Walnut. They will leave to-morrow on the steamer John Dawson, for home, where they will be gladly wel comed. Every Farmer ought to get a "Boy Clipper Plow," greatest invention cf t be age. Ja com is tho Agent. f Tom Fuller. The Tom Fuller here alluded to is one of Fayetteville's brightest son, Hon. Thos C. Fuller, of Raleizh, and it af fords us. together with his many admir er here, ereat pleasure to see him thus spoken of. Col. Fuller is one of the finest orators we have ever listened to and it would add much to the coming campaign if he could be induced to tako the stump. Faytlleville Sun. Our friend of the Sun may have an ODportunity of hearing Col. Fuller again on the stump, as ho writes to a gentleman in this city tbat, whiie he has about quit politics, yet, if Major Sted man is nominated for Lieut.-Govemor, ho shall go actively into tho campaign. Outrageous. A little after 10 o'clock last night a young gentleman, escorting a young lady on Bladen street, between Sixth and Seventh, was assaultted by acrowd of roughs, who threw rocks and brick bats at him. one of which hit him in tbe back. The same party of roughs attacked another young man with the same sort of missiles and inflicted sev eral severe, though not serious, wounds upon him. Both of those who were as saulted are respectable, peaceable and quiet younc men. The assaulting party was'com posed of young white men. It seems, lrom what information wo can obtain, that there was no reasonable provocation for the. assault; and we hope that the guilty parlies may be brought to justice Another large consignment of Sash, Doors & Winds at Factory prices, just received "at Jacob's HardirarB Depotf NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
